Job Description

Vice President for Research, Creativity, and Economic Development Overview New Mexico State University (NMSU) invites nominations and applications for the role of Vice President for Research, Creativity, and Economic Development (VPRCED). The next VPRCED will leverage NMSU's anticipated 2025 R1 designation to grow the research enterprise and enhance national and global visibility, propelled by a focused investment in innovation within the context of the University's land-grant, space-grant, MSI, and HSI missions. Founded in 1888, NMSU is New Mexico's public land-grant and space-grant institution and the oldest public institution of higher education in the state. For more than a century, the University has transformed the lives of New Mexico's diverse population through teaching, research, and public service. NMSU is uniquely positioned to meet students where they are – with nearly 22,000 students enrolled across one residential campus, an online campus, three community college campuses, and 33 statewide Extension offices. NMSU is currently classified as an R1 university: with very high spending and doctorate production by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The University is ranked in the top 22% of all institutions in terms of federal research and development expenditures and third in research expenditures among High Hispanic Enrollment Institutions without a medical school by NSF Higher Education Research and Development. NMSU is strategically positioned for Department of Energy and Department of Defense research, with key partnerships at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base, White Sands Missile Range, Spaceport America, and the NASA White Sands Test Facility. As a land-grant institution, NMSU is also a leader in agricultural research, with critical support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the State of New Mexico, driving innovation in food security, sustainability, and rural development. By aligning research with institutional strengths, NMSU aspires to expand its research enterprise and become a regional leader in creative activity. Reporting to the President and serving as the University's chief research officer, the VPRCED is responsible for leading a broad portfolio of research, including collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts at a significant scale (FY24 research expenditures of $143 million). The VPRCED provides strategic vision and executive leadership to a dynamic team of professionals in key areas, including workforce and strategic engagement, infrastructure and partnerships, research data and operations, technology transfer and economic development, and research administration. The successful candidate will possess extensive and proven leadership experience, including responsibility for large research ecosystems at a major institution. With demonstrated success in growing research endeavors and creative activity at an institution of similar size and complexity, the VPRCED will integrate NMSU's existing research strengths with emerging opportunities and new priority areas. Expertise in federal funding is essential, as is a deep knowledge of research administration, including compliance, technology transfer, and commercialization of intellectual property. The new leader will champion the University's endeavors while fostering an environment that expands and elevates the impactful research of NMSU faculty and students. WittKieffer is assisting New Mexico State University in this search. For fullest consideration, candidate materials should be received by March 19, 2025. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile. Application materials should be submitted using WittKieffer's candidate portal. Nominations and inquiries can be directed to: Zachary A. Smith, Ph.D., Sandra Chu, and Kim Migoya NMSU-VPRCED@wittkieffer.com New Mexico State University is a proud and dedicated land-grant, space-grant, Hispanic-serving, and minority-serving institution located in the borderlands and tribal lands regions.
