Description:
The job of Special Programs Teachers Assistant was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students; maximizing student learning as deemed necessary and/or required to meet the personal and academic needs of each student; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.
This job reports to Supervising Teacher and Principal/Special Education Director.

Requirements:
Essential Functions:
Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the special education teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives and documenting progress.
Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a on-site Registered Nurse.
Applies proper physical restraint techniques when necessary for the purpose of protecting the student, other students and staff. Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students in life skills (e.g. feeding, toileting, hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students’ personal hygiene.
Assists transportation personnel (e.g. loading/unloading, supervision, proper child lifting techniques, emergency evacuation, emergency equipment, use of special equipment, toileting/diaper changing, administering medication, etc.) for the purpose of providing necessary assistance and supervision of children.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, computer training, CPI training, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
Communicates with supervising instructional staff, transportation supervisor, professional support personnel, other staff and parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
Drives school vehicles for the purpose of transporting N.E.W. BOCES students over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher or specialist, instructional plans, learning goals, and objectives as designed by IEP team (e.g. daily living skills, coping skills, emotional skills, academic skills, communication skills, grooming and personal hygiene skills, job training skills, etc.) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
Maintains constant awareness of and attention to the health and safety of students including emergency procedures and
knowledge of student health concerns (e.g. seizures, diets, ambulation, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and healthy learning environment for students.
Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing written reference, and/or meeting mandated requirements.
Manages and documents student behavior in an appropriate manner for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, bus, cafeteria, parking lots, off campus activities, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
