Job Description

This is a new position in the Chin lab in the Department of Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology, University of Tennessee Knoxville is seeking an enthusiastic and proactive full-time Research Technician to join our team. The Research Technician will assist in understanding how roots grow and function in different contexts using cutting edge cell and molecular biology techniques. This position is funded for two years, and continued employment is contingent on funding. The anticipated start date is late August/early September.

Responsibilities

The Research Technician will assist with developing and validating biological resources for the lab which includes curating plant transgenic lines, PCR based genotyping, gene expression validation with qRT-PCR and microscopy to validate expression of fluorescent proteins in transgenics, plant care and other tasks as needed.

Required Qualifications

Education:
  • B.S. Biology (general), Molecular or Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Botany or similar.


Experience:

  • Preferred level of experience is one or more years of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and/or botany laboratory research experience.
  • Knowledge of basic biochemistry/biophysical/cellular biology laboratory procedures, including the use of balances, pH-meters, pipettes, and knowledge of sterile technique for bacterial and/or plant cell culture.
  • General background knowledge of scientific data analysis. Computer skills sufficient to use basic data analysis and graphing software and learn more specialized data analysis software packages.

  • General knowledge of molecular biology concepts and procedures.

  • Ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary team-based environment.
  • Attention to detail and good record- keeping practices.
  • Scientific problem-solving/troubleshooting skills.
  • Good record-keeping, attention to detail, and organizational skills. Knowledge of and ability to maintain a detailed lab notebook and other lab inventories.
  • Awareness of and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well with colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to contribute to a respectful and collegial work environment.

  • M.S. Biology (general), Molecular or Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Botany or similar


Experience:

  • One year or more of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and/or botany laboratory research experience.
  • DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, light and confocal microscopy techniques, statistical skills


Work Location: Knoxville, TN in the Hesler Biology Building. This is an on-site position.

  • Anticipated hiring range: $30,700.66 - 36,840.80
