The Polysomnographic Technologist monitors and conducts sleep studies for patients with various sleep disorders, ensuring accurate data collection and patient safety throughout overnight procedures. Responsibilities include applying electrodes, calibrating equipment, patient monitoring, and documenting study results in compliance with medical and departmental standards. Required qualifications include licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner or Polysomnographic Technologist and training in related allied health fields.
Under the general direction of the Sleep Disorders Center Technical Director, conducts studies and safe monitoring of clinical patients. Clinical patients vary in age from adolescence to geriatric and evaluations can be for any of 150 different sleep/wake disorders. Most commonly, technologists encounter sleep apnea, narcolepsy, night terrors, nocturnal myoclonus and clinical insomnia.
