About the Job

This position will have the primary responsibility for performing a variety of manual labor tasks related to the cattle and assist in forage production at NCROC. The position is a 67 day temporary appointment.

Major Areas of Accountability (These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class.)

Animal Health Care (30%)
  • Observe and care for animals during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, calving, and newborn calf care. This includes ensuring calves receive colostrum promptly, assisting calves with nursing, tagging animals, obtaining weights, castration, record keeping, vaccinations, and assisting with breeding. Communication with the VCPR veterinarian if there are animal health concerns, and assist in the treatment of injuries or illnesses, provide treatment prescribed by the veterinarian or supervisor, as well as daily herd health inspections.

Feed and Feeding (30%)

  • Responsible for preparing feed for cattle (including weighing, bagging, mixing, and grinding), daily feed delivery by hand, tractor, or feed mixer/feed wagon. In addition, monitoring the
    water system and maintaining clean water and waterer for cattle. Assist in winter-feed acquisition, placement, and storage.

Animal Facility Use (20%)

  • Clean and maintain the sanitation of tractors/vehicles, barns, offices/labs, animal pens, water tanks (stationary or portable), and other animal facilities. Oil, clean, and make minor repairs on equipment and tools.

Animal Handling (15%)

  • Move cattle during rotational grazing during summer months, post partum pairs to designated areas, and all age groups of animals handling facilities safely and efficiently.

Data Collection (5%)

  • Assist scientists with the collection of experimental data associated with cattle studies.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • High school graduate with three (3) years of full-time experience in the care of large animals, or a combination of related college coursework and experience in the care of large animals totaling three (3) years.
  • A valid Minnesota Driver's License.
  • Must be able to lift up to 1201bs; 70lbs continuously; 70-1OOlbs frequently; 100-120 lbs occasionally.

Desired Qualifications

  • General farm labor experience.
  • Experience in operating farm tractors and equipment.
  • Trained to perform castration, administer vaccinations SQ/IM/IV or pour on.

About the Department

The position is located at the North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) in Grand Rapids, MN. NCROC is committed to conducting broad-based research and education programs relevant to the diverse cultural and environmental landscape of north central Minnesota.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $23.34 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
