Function The Civil Process Officers primary responsibility is to serve civil and/or criminal documents. Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Deputy of Court Services and is accountable for use of delegated authority. Pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia and Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Hampton Sheriff's Office., the incumbent must qualify to carry and use firearms. Pursuant to §15.2-1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.
Examples of Work - Demonstrates positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public
- Notifies grand jury selectees
- Executes and returns civil and criminal processes
- Executes court orders
- Locates, levies, and sells property at public auctions
- According to a monthly schedule, will be on-call to pick up mental patients and transports to confinement locations
- Assist the courtroom security officer as needed
- When directed, performs special or security assignments
- Provide proof of service by completing affidavits of service
- Locate & notify defendants of pending legal action
- Keep detailed records and file reports
- Responsible for conducting vehicle inspections and reporting deficiencies
- Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines and directives of the office on an ongoing basis
- Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times
- Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
- Disseminates information as it is given by the Department's Administration
- When applicable, commend and/or follow disciplinary actions for all deputy sheriffs
- Follows all Federal, State and Local laws
- Performs any other tasks as required
Qualifications - Thorough knowledge of all laws, rules, regulations and procedures applicable to the execution and administration of legal process
- Comprehensive knowledge of civil process procedures.
- Ability to communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationship with city and court officials, employees and the general public
- Ability to oversee the preparation and maintenance of legal instruments; related records and reports
- Knowledge of use of force techniques and ability to use force when applicable
- Appropriate use of firearms and other facility issued or approved equipment

- Ability to read and comprehend laws, ordinances and orders

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Must be Civil Process DCJS certified.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. Requires annual physical and physical agility test. Requires operation of firearm and standard office equipment.
