Job Title: Applied Chiller Field Service Engineer

Location: San Francisco, CA

Job Summary

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Applied Chiller Field Service Engineer to join our growing San Francisco, CA team. This field-based role is focused on the diagnostics, maintenance, and optimization of complex HVAC systems in commercial, institutional, and mission-critical facilities. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with large-capacity chillers (100+ tons), central plant operations, and building automation systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Chiller Service & Repair: Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair air- and water-cooled chillers, including centrifugal, screw, and scroll systems from OEMs such as Trane, Carrier, York, and Daikin.
  • System Commissioning: Perform start-up, programming, calibration, and performance verification of newly installed or retrofitted chiller systems.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Implement and document comprehensive scheduled maintenance programs for chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and other central plant components.
  • Field Engineering Collaboration: Support engineering and project teams by validating system designs, ensuring equipment performance, and resolving technical issues in the field.
  • Controls & BAS Integration: Interface with Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS) to monitor and fine-tune control sequences for energy efficiency and reliability.
  • Emergency Support: Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to address urgent service requests and ensure customer uptime.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of service activities, including diagnostics, repairs, system performance, and customer communication.
  • Customer Engagement: Communicate clearly and professionally with building owners, facility engineers, and contractors to deliver technical guidance and service updates.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to OSHA regulations and company safety protocols, including lockout/tagout and confined space procedures.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of field experience with large-tonnage chillers and central plant systems.
  • Associate degree or technical training in HVAC Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • EPA Universal Certification (Section 608).
  • Proficiency in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, control systems, and schematic interpretation.
  • Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a customer-first approach.
  • Ability to travel across the San Francisco Bay Area to service customer sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Manufacturer training or certifications from Trane, Carrier, York, Daikin, Mitsubishi, or equivalent.
  • Experience working in mission-critical environments like hospitals, data centers, or research facilities.
  • Knowledge of commissioning tools, vibration analysis equipment, and refrigerant recovery systems.
  • Familiarity with BAS protocols, including BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
